There really hasn’t been a better time to try triathlon and we’ll share a few reasons why in this post.

Triathlon isn’t just a sport as it becomes much more than that to most women. You may start off triathlon with one goal in mind, but you soon realise that there are many more reasons why you want to continue training for triathlon. We have selected our top 4 reasons why women are choosing triathlon and reasons that also keep us training and racing year after year.

Why is it a great time for women to start triathlon?

There have been many fantastic initiatives developed to help break down the barriers for women to start triathlon. Some of the greatest include:

1. Women-Only Events

In the UK, there are several triathlon events that are exclusively for women, such as the Women’s Only Triathlon, the Shock Absorber WomenOnly Triathlon, you’ll sure find something in the GOTri event page too. These events provide such a supportive and inclusive environment for women to participate in triathlons and connect with other women athletes, it’s an electrifying atmosphere and great to feel part of a community.

2. Shorter Distances

The initial concept of a triathlon race is that it’s such a long distance, but now there are all kinds of triathlon distances that are enabling women at all stages of fitness to get involved. There is even races as short as 200m swim (that’s 8 lengths in a 25m pool), a 5k bike and 1.6k run! Take a look at the Human Race Taster Sessions, or GoTri races.

3. Accessible Training Programs

There have been many investments in coaching and training programs that specifically target women, and particulalry in the UK. British Triathlon for example is the governing body for triathlon in the UK and it has developed numerous coaching and support for women athletes at all levels. There are also several triathlon clubs that offer women-only training sessions and coaching programs to help develop skills and confidence. Why not see if there is something that takes your eye!

4. Women Campaigns and Initiatives

The UK has launched several campaigns and initiatives to promote triathlon to women. One of the most successful initiatives is the This Girl Can campaign, which encourages women of all ages and abilities to participate in physical activities, including triathlon. The campaign has been credited with helping to increase the number of women participating in sports across the UK.

Why start triathlon?

Through this comprehensive approach to increasing the popularity of triathlon for women, there are many reasons why women are choosing to participate in triathlons! Here’s our top four reasons as to why we continue to train for triathlon as we are sure many other women do too:

1. Empowerment

Triathlon is a sport that allows us to challenge ourselves and push beyond our limits. We feel empowered, both physically and mentally, feeling a huge sense of accomplishment, confidence, and self-worth.

2. Health and Fitness

Training involves a combination of cardio and strength training and we have seen great improvements in our fitness as we continue to train. Through this we have started to eat better, lose weight whilst building muscle which has given us a new confidence and energy.

3. The Community

The triathlon community is fun and supportive. We love racing with other women and have found our closest friends through this sport. We have a connection that we share together and often have similar interests and passions in other aspects of our lives.

4. The Challenge

Triathlon is a sport that requires discipline, determination, and commitment. We strive for the challenge of training and competing in a triathlon race. The sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a race is a powerful motivator to continue.

A resilient You!

These are our top 4 reasons, but there are endless reasons why women are choosing to participate in triathlons. Whatever their motivation may be, women who participate in triathlons are pushing themselves to achieve their goals and are inspiring others to do the same.
