Reignite Your Joy for Running

We all fall out of love with running at times.
Sometimes it’s physical, like injury, fatigue, or hormones. Other times it’s mental, like burnout, boredom, or life simply getting in the way.

I hear from so many women who say, “I used to love running… but I’ve completely lost my mojo.” If that sounds like you, take a breath. You’re not alone and this doesn’t have to be the end of your running story.

Think of this moment not as a setback, but as a reset.

When Running Loses Its Spark

Running is more than exercise. It’s often our therapy, our time-out, our confidence booster. But when it starts feeling like a chore, or when comparison creeps in (hello, Strava scrolling…), the spark can flicker out.
So what do you do when running feels flat?

Well, you don’t need to overhaul your training, buy new shoes, or sign up for an ultra.

You just need to reconnect to the joy of it.

Here are 5 free, easy, instant ways to reset your running joy:

1. Run with a Friend (or Join a Group)

Running can be isolating, but it doesn’t have to be.

Sharing miles with a friend makes everything feel lighter.

If no one’s free? Try a virtual run at the same time, or message someone after you’ve both done your own loops.

Accountability + community = magic.

2. Leave the Watch at Home

Set yourself free from stats and numbers. Run for feel, not pace. No splits. No pressure. Just you, your breath, and your surroundings. It’s like taking your inner critic off the invite list.

3. Change Your Route

The same old loop can dull your senses. Try a trail, explore a new neighbourhood, or just run your usual path backwards. Your brain wakes up, your body reacts differently and suddenly, it’s an adventure again.

4. Run for Something That Isn’t Running

Give your run a playful purpose. Chase the sunrise. Run until you hear your favourite guilty pleasure song. Look for 3 cute dogs. Let it feel like a game. (Remember when we ran just to play tag?)

5. Create a "Joy" Playlist

As someone who has grown up playing and listening to music, I know the power or music! Build a playlist of songs that lift your mood even if they’re cheesy. Let yourself bop along, smile, and run with rhythm. If your feet match the beat, even better.

You Deserve a Reset (Not a Punishment)

If you’ve been struggling to get back into running, be gentle with yourself. You’re not lazy, broken, or unmotivated…you’re just human. Your relationship with running will change over time, and that’s OK.

You’re allowed to take breaks. You’re allowed to come back with fresh eyes. You’re allowed to run differently now.

If you’re craving a deeper reset, I’ve created something special for women like you: the Tuscany Run Retreat. It’s not a race or bootcamp, it’s 4 days of Italian Dolce Vita, scenic runs, delicious food, laughter, and connection with other women who love movement but also want more joy, more wine, and less pressure.

It’s about falling back in love with running and with yourself.
But until then, take one of these 5 tips and try it today. Not tomorrow. Not next Monday. Today.
