Films to Watch Before Your Tuscan Trip

If you’re coming on one of our Tuscany Run Retreats, or visiting Tuscany on your own, you’ll love immersing yourself in the landscapes, history, and culture of your destination – before you even arrive. Watching films and TV series shot in Siena is a fantastic way to set the mood. From heart-pounding action scenes to romantic historical dramas, these films capture the essence of Siena and it’s surroundings!

Siena on the Big Screen

1. Quantum of Solace (2008) - My Favourite!

James Bond fans, take note—Quantum of Solace features an unforgettable car chase through the narrow streets of Siena and dramatic rooftop action scenes during the Palio di Siena, the city’s legendary horse race. Watching this film will make you eager to experience the thrill of the Piazza del Campo, whether you visit during the Palio or not.

2. Stealing Beauty (1996)

For a more poetic and intimate look at Tuscany, Stealing Beauty, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, is a mesmerizing choice. While much of the film is set in the countryside, scenes in Siena capture the medieval charm of the city. The film’s dreamy cinematography and lush scenery make it a beautiful prelude to your trip.

3. The Best Offer (2013)

This psychological drama, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, weaves an intriguing story of art and mystery, with stunning shots of Siena’s Gothic architecture and historic streets. If you love art and antiques, this film will add an extra layer of appreciation for Siena’s rich artistic heritage.

4. A Journey Through Time with The Medici Series

If you’re a fan of historical dramas, Medici: Masters of Florence (2016-2019) is a must-watch. This TV series brings the Renaissance to life, focusing on the powerful Medici family and their influence on Florence’s political and artistic scene. Shot in both Florence and Siena, the show showcases Brunelleschi’s Dome, Palazzo Vecchio, and Siena’s medieval alleys, giving you a taste of the grandeur and intrigue that shaped these cities.

Bringing Italy to Your Table

I love to watch films and try to remember some of the specific points of the film for when I visit a place. It creates even more excitement to know that you’re standing where the real James Bond was!  On our trip, as we soak in the medieval beauty of Siena, you’ll sure recognise locations from the screen, it’s quite exciting to picture it!

If you haven’t yet booked a trip to Tuscany, well, you might feel the urge after watching these films! If you’re keen and don’t want to plan, why not join the Tuscany Run Retreats. It’s the perfect way to experience these breathtaking landscapes, historic cities, and vibrant culture in a way that’s active, social, and unforgettable!
