The Flavours of Tuscany in September: Harvest Energy for Runners
September in Tuscany is a magical time. The heat of summer softens into a golden warmth, the vineyards are heavy with ripened grapes, and the air carries the promise of a bountiful harvest. As a runner living in this beautiful region, I’ve come to appreciate how Tuscany’s September offerings are not only delicious but also perfectly tailored to fuel an active lifestyle.
Seasonal Eating: A Runner’s Secret Weapon
Eating with the seasons is one of the best ways to nourish your body. Seasonal ingredients are fresher, more flavourful, and at their nutritional peak – giving runners the energy and recovery support needed for those autumn training sessions.
What’s in Season in September?
September is harvest time, bringing an array of fruits and vegetables bursting with flavour and nutrients. Here are some highlights and why they’re great for runners:
Grapes (Uva): High in natural sugars and hydration, grapes provide a quick energy boost for long runs.
Figs (Fichi): Packed with potassium, figs help maintain electrolyte balance and prevent muscle cramps.
Tomatoes (Pomodori): Full of lycopene and vitamin C, tomatoes aid in recovery and reduce inflammation.
Zucchini and Zucchini Flowers (Zucchine e Fiori di Zucca): Hydrating and light, these are ideal for pre-run meals or snacks.
Mushrooms (Funghi): Especially porcini mushrooms, these are a source of selenium and antioxidants to strengthen your immune system.
Typical Dishes in September
September is my favourite month if we’re talking all things food! I love porcini mushrooms and figs—they are just the best! It’s all a fun activity I do to get out in the woods and search for these foods myself. Where we stay at the Villa during the Tuscany Run Retreat, it is surrounded by acres of land and a high chance of finding these delicious fresh foods! And even if we don’t find them, we’ll be treated to them with a feast by the incredible owners!
1. Schiacciata all’Uva

A sweet focaccia baked with wine grapes and sugar—perfect as a post-run treat to replenish glycogen stores.
2. Pasta con Funghi Porcini

Fresh pasta tossed with porcini mushrooms in a garlic and olive oil sauce, offering a balance of carbs and nutrients for recovery.
3. Insalata di Pomodori e Basilico

A simple tomato and basil salad, dressed with olive oil to provide healthy fats and antioxidants.
4. Fichi e Prosciutto

Omg this is just scrumptious! Juicy figs wrapped in salty prosciutto create a snack that’s as balanced as it is delicious.
